2 Purchases Today

Went to take a test on-campus today, so, I decided to stop by Goodwill on the way home.

I got 2 things:
1. Netgear Prosafe JF524 LINK This is the rackmount version - the one I got wasn't.
2. Another copy of Section 8 for my brother. (brand new and unopened)

Why is this so significant?
1. I no longer have to hear the constant LOUD fans on my old 24 port switch
2. I got roughly 135/145 dollars worth of stuff....for 11 bucks!
3. The section 8 box - well - just look at the pictures

They also had a few VPN Firewalls there...2 were wireless ...but... really don't need that

49.99 - 12.99 - 9.99 - 7.99 - 4.99 - 3.99 - 2.99

Opera 10.50

I am a pretty die-hard Firefox fan, but, Opera 10.50 in combination with the Z-1 Glass theme - it looks awesome...and its FAST.

The theme utilizes Vista/7 Aero - so - Mac and xp users....m'sorry.

Here are some pics of the "speed dial" page with various backgrounds

Privacy Tips For Google Buzz

So, alot of people are worried about Buzz'z privacy.

Basically:
Unless you select "private" then anyone can see your buzzes!

So here are a few things you should consider changing:

In your google profile:
1. Go into settings (top right - edit profile - about me tab) and uncheck the "show followers/following"
2. At the bottom of that same tab...it give you the option to change your page link - it will basically change it from your gmail user name to a bunch of random numbers
3. In the "Contact Info" tab go ahead and add some info in there - just be sure to change who can see that info.

When posting Buzzes:
1. Select private! when it says "public" it means it. When you select "private" you need to select groups to post it too. I usually just select "my contacts" because it posts it to everyone. Everyone includes everyone I am following and who are following me (as their Buzz contact info - but not email address - is added to your contacts automatically). I pretty much now know who will be seeing the post - as I can block and add people to my follower/following list as well as delete them from my contact list (it requires you to keep an eye on who you have in your contacts - but you should really be doing that anyway)

Thats all for now!

Google Buzz

So,

The most common thing people are saying right now....what is Google Buzz? Well, Google explains it pretty well:

So, its basically...twitter. Except its integrated into your g-mail account - thus - its easy to use - and its already "right there".

There is also a mobile version of Buzz - with Geo-location and the works:

Now for a few tips:
1. Alot of you are complaining about the "spam" it creates. Well, at the moment, the easiest way to remove that is to make an email filter with the keyword "buzz" and have it either delete or archive it.

2. Another thing, lets say....you use a program like Outlook or Thunderbird, and don't want to open a browser, browse to your normally un-used, and, therefore, un-familiar, webmail account page.
Well, you cal always send your buzz, along with the links to videos and images, to buzz@gmail.com.

Finally:
There has been a rumor going around that you should make it so that only contacts see who you are following a nd who your followers are...because anyone can see their email addresses. That is completely untrue! Do you really think that Google would be that dumb?

Also, people are complaining that , because you can follow complete strangers and they can follow you....nothing is private, so you should turn off the feature that shows who is following you. This is true...however...when it says "public" it MEANS IT! But, you can always select, for EVERY buzz, whether you want it to be public..or private!

Play it safe on the internet y'all!

All Done (mostly)

Well, it only took me a few hours...I guess I under-estimated myself :)

The new server is up and running. All of the sites hosted (www.ke7dux.com, www.gollehonstree.com) are all back up.

With one exception: cw.ke7dux.com. I am in the process of setting our clan site up using Joomla, a CMS . I ahve never used a CMS before..so its gonna take awhile. But, when its done, Imagine a good-looking site with amazing phpbb integration, as well as live game server and TeamSpeak stats.

Old Server Specs:

AMD Athlon 1.1Ghz + 512mb PC133 - Socket A

New Server Specs:

Intel Celeron 2.7GHz + 512 (maybe 768)mb DDR3200 - Socket 478

I know, I know...nothing amazing...but it IS a pretty huge step up from the old server

In other server news:

Clanmembers Rejoice! (maybe)

(dual xeon skt771 - eATX magic!) (maybe)

New Web-Server

Just a little warning,

My current server was never meant to be permanent. Now I have the parts for a newer computer.

So, the site is probably gonna be up and down over the next few weeks.

GPC

I was cleaning, glanced at the old guitar, then my pile of old motherboards... need I say more?

The Guitar

.
The Guitar + Keyboard

.
The Guitar + Everything

I am planning on re-finishing it as the current finish is all but completely gone.

Preferably I would be getting a atom-based mini-itx mobo for this and using linux on a thumb drive.
BUT, I counted it all up and new mobo + 1gb memory + new micro powersupply would be just under a hundred dollars - A hundred dollars I need for gas and college.

1st Week of College

Now that I'm done with my homework for the week (well, I left some reading for tomorrow), I am able to sit back and reflect on this first week of college.

The drive there isn't all that bad, about a 20 minute drive if it's dry, 30-35 if its wet. I really enjoy driving in general, so, even if it was longer I wouldn't mind.
Parking: I have learned to skip the front entrances and park WAY in back. On Monday and Wednesday morning, I spent about 10 minutes searching for a spot...only to end up in the same place each time.

Classes:
CIS120 (Computer Concepts 1) I pretty much know everything in the textbook for this class, but, I enjoy talking and discussing tech, no matter how much I know about it. I am aslo hoping that there will be plenty of small bits of info I didn't already know.

MTH60 (Beginning algebra 1) So far, quite easy. I was expecting it to be easy as I am mainly taking this for review, I expect it to be a bit harder by the end of the term.

BUS101 (business overview) As my teacher put it "we will be covering miles of information only an inch deep".

Computer Careers Exploration - so far only a really simple task of saving a doc to disk, adding my name to it, and uploading it to the course website.

CIS120L (Lab portion of CIS120) - meets for the first time this Tuesday.

So far so good, not too much homework. I met someone I know on campus on monday.

That's all for now -
